Creator(s) of the Month: Laura & Bernè Givens (Navajo)

We're thrilled to announce May's Creators of the Month Laura & Bernè Givens of Nizhoniful Things, which can loosely be translated to "Beautiful Things"! This dynamic pair of Navajo sisters use elements like seed beads, thread, fur, shells, and salmon skin leather to create all the products from Nizhoniful Things. Through events like these, social media and in-store pop ups we are amplifying Native arts, culture and craftmanship.

Make your choices count! Whether you purchase, like, share or simply love and engage with Nizhoniful Things all of it makes a difference! By engaging with this and other Indigenous small businesses, you are giving indelible support to the continuation of their work and dreams. Be sure to send, tag and share photos of any purchased work - the sisters LOVE to see even more "Nizhonifulness" (re: Beautifulness) spread with every sale!

Both sisters deeply appreciate and respect their indigenous culture and community surrounding them, drawing from the teachings and knowledge of their peoples, the Navajo Nation and the Bitter Water Clan. Their influences not only look towards the future or contemporary Indigenous art, but also draws from the past, especially from photographers like Edward Curtis. Using his photographs - "we look at the people who he photographed and took notice of all the beautiful regalia and jewelry our ancestors had. Our ancestors remind us of who we are and what it means to wear our heritage". 

The art they create is deeply rooted "within our mind and soul which brings us happiness, harmony, and peace — we hope you feel the same when wearing them". 

“Our art that we practice is flat stitch, which is practiced throughout Indian county- we also add a contemporary twist with salmon skin leathers and different furs and shells. We are indigenous sisters looking for Nizhoniful (re: Beautiful) humans to make our wearable artwork into stunning masterpieces.”
